PDF Launches NGOs Award of Excellence

The Award aims at encouraging Egyptian NGOs in managing successful projects which will help them in maintaining the sustainablity of their organizations and supporting their internal capacity to aid them in reaching their goals and develop their communities. Ashoka Arab World Initiative: A Better Future for Homeless Children

The initiative is an endeavor generated as a collaboration with Ashoka Fellows and homeless children associations. The initiative aims at improving the living conditions and the services provided to homeless children in their respective shelters and reception centers run by local NGOs for more influential social impact. The initiative will work on organizing and providing a range of workshops and training courses for staff members affiliated to these associations as well as equipping the homeless children with the required skills and information for better life.

New Draft Law for NGOs in Egypt

In July 2015, the Ministry of Social Solidarity announced that it had finalized a new draft NGO law to replace Law No. 84 of 2002 on Associations and Foundations, and sent it to the Council of Ministers for review. The NGO law is expected to be addressed by the incoming Parliament following parliamentary elections planned for October and November 2015. In the meantime, NGOs in Egypt remain subject to a Ministry Order issued in the summer of 2014, under which “all entities conducting civil society activities” in Egypt were instructed to register under Law 84 or be subject to investigation or possible prosecution.

$15 million worth of new environmental projects in Egypt

The Ministry of Environment in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the technical support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has succeeded in obtaining a new package of grants from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) worth $11 million to implement three projects within the national environmental priorities and promote Egypt’s partnership with the international community as regards to the implementation of international environmental conventions. Additionally, the Government of Italy has provided $4 million to implement the Third Phase of the Egyptian-Italian Environmental Cooperation Programme (EIECP), which is implemented under the supervision of UNDP
